What it does

The Bowl Sander, in three points

  1. Dual bearings

Two bearings keep the head turning smoothly and cool under pressure.

  2. Angle by a knob

Tilt the head so the pad sits flat on the inside curve.

  3. Three pad sizes

1, 2 and 3 in foam pads flex to the shape of the wood.

At the bench

Sanding a bowl with a folded sheet leaves rings, because the paper meets the wood in one direction. A bowl sander's pad spins as the bowl spins, so the scratches cross and fade. Hold the handle, touch the pad to the work at the edge and move toward the center. Step through the grits from 60 to 320. The long aluminum handle keeps your hand away from the rim.

Check before you buy

  • You own a lathe and turn bowls or platters.
  • You want the 3 in pad for wide curves.
  • You will work through the grits in order.

Limits

Pick another one if

It has no motor. The lathe does the work, so it only sands wood that is turning. On a flat board it does nothing. Our lathe tool set includes a smaller sander with 1 and 2 in pads. Buy this one for the 3 in pad and the larger stock of discs.

Save your money, go with a better option

Tip doesn't lock in, so it can slide out, and fall off (and does occasionally). I don't use this anymore... too big of a pain.

Easy to use and good quality. Have only used a few times on small bowls but works great. Would buy again.
